Using Your Credit Card Safely Online
One of the main reasons why people choose not to buy things online is because they are worried about credit card fraud. This occurs when credit card details are stolen and then used to buy items illegally. This can be extremely problematic, especially when the fraud goes undetected, as the victim’s credit rating can be irreparably damaged because huge debts have been raised by the person who stole the credit card details. However, one of the most important things to remember about using a credit card online is that it is actually the safest way of paying for something, as opposed to other forms of payment that are not protected by government regulation or various banking institutions. So, how come so many people suffer from credit card fraud when buying something online? And what can one do to prevent it happening?
One of the easiest ways to avoid credit card fraud online is to only buy from trusted retailers. If a consumer only purchases items from companies with an excellent record, that have high-level security systems, and which are well trusted by other customers, they shouldn’t have a problem. Whilst this is a great strategy, it isn’t always completely practical. What can a consumer do if they want to buy an item that is only available from a fairly unknown website? Firstly, they should conduct a little bit of initial research, just to see if other users have reported problems with that retailer. If they see some bad reviews relating to any form of fraud, it would be a good idea to keep looking elsewhere. On the other hand, if there are good reviews of the retailer, and it looks like they have been selling products online for a long period of time, the customer can be relatively sure that they will not experience any problems.
One of the mistakes that people make is to buy from a retailer which seems to offer a very low price for a normally high-priced product. This is dangerous because some of these websites are created purely to capture credit card details, or just to take money once a consumer has purchased the product. Many users have reported buying from such a website, only to find that the website has disappeared completely, 24 hours later.
It is a good idea to look for a secure server when one is going through the ordering process, no matter what website they are on. When a customer is entering their personal details, they should see “https://” rather than “http://” in the address bar. This indicates that they are using a secure server, so their details will be encrypted and should be completely safe.
