Balance transfer credit cards allow a cardholder to transfer the balance of their existing credit card to a new credit card. As the balance is transferred, the cardholder is usually given the opportunity to have lower monthly payments brought about by a lower interest rate. Most balance transfer credit cards usually offer a 0% interest rate for the first six to 15 months. After the grace period is over, the regular annual percentage rate would be applied. This means that if you’re able to pay off your balance within the period when the honeymoon rate is still in effect, then you’ll be able to save a huge amount in potential interest charges.
Aside from saving you a lot on finance charges, you would also be able to use the card for regular purchases, just like how you would with a regular credit card. Balance transfer credit cards also usually offer a rewards program of some sort, from cash rebates to travel discounts to frequent flyer miles to other miscellaneous rewards. They also provide other regular conveniences such as online banking and protection from fraudulent transactions or unauthorized purchases, along with some other value-added services.
It is very easy to apply for a balance transfer credit card today with all the available offers on the market. It is important, however, to make sure that you review the different balance transfer credit card offers out there and match a card with the kind of spending pattern that you have.
